This study adopts an intellectual-historical approach using the Layered Method in Thought Studies to explore the religious peace-oriented thought in contemporary Iran (the Islamic Republic period). The research proceeds through three main stages: Pre-thought analysis, which clarifies the conceptual framework, background, and key indicators of religious pacifism; Thinker identification, focusing on major figures such as Na‘matollah Salehi Najafabadi, Mehdi Bazargan, Mohammad Mojtahed Shabestari, Seyyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad, Abdolkarim Soroush, Mohsen Kadivar, Mohammad Jafar Amir-Moezzi, and Ali Akbar Alekhani;Thought analysis, which examines their works on peace, violence, and coexistence. The findings show that religious peace-oriented ideas in Iran emerged amid post-revolutionary political and social crises, the Iran–Iraq war, ideological interpretations of religion, and the tension between idealism and political realism.According to these thinkers, the main causes of violence and non-peacefulness in Iranian society include political conflicts, militant interpretations of Islam, legitimization of violence through jurisprudential rules, official and absolutist readings of religion, ideological rigidity, infiltration of pre-Islamic violent culture, epistemological confusions in understanding religion, and “sacred ignorance.” In response, they propose various solutions such as unity, religious democracy, ethical interpretation of war and peace in Shi‘i thought, pluralism, and the development of a theology of peace.
