The theory of the decline of political thought in Iran is one of the notable theories in the field of political thought. This theory proposes a new analysis of the history of political thought in Iran and, as such, has therefore been criticized and examined by a number of scholars. Reading the history of political thought in Iran from the perspective of decline has led Seyyed Javad Tabatabai to formulate this theory and, ultimately, to the conclusion of the "Iran’s decadence ". The theory of decline, in addition to being presented and published in the book “The Decline of Political Thought in Iran: A Discourse on the Theoretical Foundations of Iran's Decadence”, has been expanded and developed in Tabatabai’s other works, and has also included Iranian history from ancient times to the contemporary period. This theory is the result of the arrangement of several fundamental components in his intellectual system, which are critically examined in this research under the titles “Conflict in the Perception of Greece as the Birthplace of Political Thought”, “Incompatibility of Farabi’s Philosophy with Tabatabai’s Intellectual System”, “Farabi and Divine Plato”, and “Tabatabai’s Contradictions About Divine Aristotle-Plato”. Given the importance and antiquity of the history of political thought in Iran as one of the most important areas of study in Iranology, this research seeks to critique and examine this theory. This article, using a qualitative research method and adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, concludes that the fundamental components of the theory of the decline of political thought in Iran indicate conflict and contradiction in Seyyed Javad Tabatabai’s theorizing.
