Political Imagination and the Iranian Woman in the Contemporary World

Abstract
Imaginations, by shaping people’s mentalities, cultures, and social worlds, lay the groundwork for social movements. Al-Farabi considered "politics" as requiring engagement with the general public—where imagination replaces rational thought—and believed it necessitates creating a kind of internal acceptance in their hearts, achievable only through imaginative tools. In the contemporary world, media plays a significant role in shaping individual and collective imagination, and political and social actors use this tool extensively to influence public minds. One of the major socio-political challenges in Iran over the past century has been women’s rights and the issue of hijab, in which media also plays a significant role. This raises the question: what is the relationship between women’s rights in Iran and political imagination?
Assuming that women’s rights constitute a social field, the study first explains the concept of political imagination within Islamic philosophy and also Kant’s philosophy. Then, using Bourdieu’s theory and the Van Dijk discourse analysis method, it examines the issue of hijab as a social field to identify the relationship between objective reality and the mental constructs of actors surrounding the hijab issue. The findings show that the objective realities and social changes regarding women’s rights and hijab have been influenced by the mindset and political imagination of both the social actors and the general public.
